Always an amazing meal. If you go home hungry, it's your fault. I enjoy their Teriyaki Beef & Tempura combo.

I went to Koyo with my friends for dinner which they mentioned was a great Japanese option. As I arrived I was seated promptly in a secluded comfortable booth. I decided to order 2 sushi rolls. The spider and spicy tuna. (Basic stuff for any sushi restaurant. They were absolutely delicious! I also tried some of my friends meals and they were all very tasty! The reason I am not giving them a five star is to make a dining experience 5 star they have to have there atmosphere perfect. They were missing background music and that kinda put me in a bored mood while waiting for food. Play some house/jazz and I would have been excited for my food even more! Over all great experience. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys Japanese food.

What have you done to one of my favorite Japanese Restaurants in Salt Lake City? Not enough to hate but not enough to love. I used to love this place. Something now missing. Not quite what it used to be. It still has good ambiance and friendly service but that thing that made it authentic is missing.

My Favorite Japanese restaurant. Love to go here so local, warm, peaceful, quiet & calming. Good variety & always cooked with great care. ROMANTIC, AUTHENTIC, & TRADITIONAL!

If you're planning on going here for the first time, read this review first. I like Koyo A LOT... for LUNCH... and NOT PARTICULARLY FOR THE SUSHI OR SASHIMI, AND --MOST IMPORTANTLY-- NOT THE ROLLS!!! THIS IS NOT A HIP, NEW-SCHOOL 'SPECIALTY ROLL' RESTAURANT, PEOPLE. This is a traditional-style place that's been in this somwehat upscale, white, old-school, Mormon, Holladay neighborhood forever, whose specialty is traditional Japanese cuisine, not necessarily sushi. A Bento box of some kind, or other lunch special is recommended. Do not come here expecting to be wowed with Wolfgang Puck-ish creative ingredient combos, or Top Chef-style cutting-edge, fusional raspberry-pear/shiso/escolar/hazelnut layered roll type bullpucky. Koyo don't play that. They also probably don't have fish flown in and delivered thrice nightly by truck through the back door, either. (It's smart when choosing restaurants to use your intuition a bit to anticipate these kinds of things sometimes, so as not to be hit too hard with devastation and disappointment when the obvious eventually strikes you.) Very cool, traditional Japanese decor, and downright decent... in fact, quite good food, really. The atmosphere is very calm and pleasant during the day; Dark, old-school, quiet, relaxing... A perfect place to go over some work papers to the soothing sounds of shamisen or kokyu music while you nibble on some tempura or teriyaki. Or sit back, relax, and let the spirit of Kurosawa creep in and intoxicate your soul over a bowl of donburi. However, I strongly recommend daytime visits here, due to the fact that this place transforms by night into a loud, brightly lit, Mayberry/Branson, Missouri-type family atmosphere. Chuck E. Cheese, watch the hell out! Yes, It seems that every Mormon in the valley who likes Japanese converges here in the evening, especially on the weekends. Long waits, screaming kids, surly elderly folks griping about their food, mistakes by the servers/kitchen, and so forth. It can really be a, um... nightmare, of sorts. Heh heh. Koyo, we'll see you for lunch!

No salmon? MINUS FOUR STARS! Only kidding. They earned this rating in other ways, too. For some reason, I am lazy at the thought of reviewing this place. Almost like it's not worth my efforts. Anyways, here I go: Slow service. Waiter was high. No salmon. Food took forever. No salmon. Sushi had a bad aftertaste. Koyo Roll: No. Mars Twist: Inedible. Gyoza appetizer: freezer to microwave. No salmon. BAD. BAD. BAD. *No salmon because "the owner thinks it goes bad too fast." So yea, think about how fresh the rest of the fish must be. End.

Excellent! Traditional. Quality. This is very much like the Japanese food you get in Japan and in San Francisco. It is not the Americanized-cream cheese laden- food you get in a lot of place. Most Japanese do not eat nearly as much sushi as Americans but instead eat more 'hot pots' and other meals at home. Sushi plays a minor roll here and the rolls are traditional, not geared towards American tastes (i.e. deep fried, loaded up and filled with cream cheese). They are clean, bright and fresh. This Allows the true taste of good seafood to come through. Give it a try

Best traditional japanese cuisine in the valley. The sukiyaki is by far the best I have ever had. Servers are friendly. We don't go here for sushi because everything else is so good.

Maybe I'm bias, but this will be the only 5 Stars I give out. My father who grew up in Monterey, CA; grandma would have fresh fish every day; he only orders the sashimi from Koyo's or Kyoto's. I love the tempura, agedashi tofu, tonkatsu, sukiyaki, and everything else. This place will always hold a special place in my heart.

Wow I was very disappointed by this place, but I still give it three stars for the gracious service, clean restaurant and nice quiet decor. The food was a different story though. To start my lunch I had the baja roll. It was supposed to be ebi tempura with a spicy sauce. The tempura batter was more like the batter you would get on popcorn shrimp at sizzler and the roll was tasteless and lifeless. For my main course I ordered the Katsu Don which is a bowl of rice with pork cutlet and green onions. Horrible. The cutlet was fried as Katsu should be, but looked, felt and tasted like it had been in a steamer after being fried. It was soggy! Yuck. The meal came with a choice of soup or salad and I ordered the salad and while it was typical of Japanese restaurants with it's ice burg lettuce and shredded cabbage with mustard dressing it was much better than most and the highlight of the meal. It came with a canned beet slice (I love these and I don't know why) and a very nice stone ground honey mustard dressing completely unlike the fluorescent yellow dressing you usually get. It was quite good. So three stars it is for great service, nice digs and a wonderful salad, but stay away from everything else.

I've been here 2 times now. The second time was NYE 2011. walked in at 6:30 pm and got a nice tatami room in about 5 minutes. Servers are very warm and friendly. The lady owner manages the kitchen and seemed to be enjoying being with the staff on NYE in the back of the house. Great things can be had here. Very different menu style, you are likely to get bewidered by the menu offering because there are only 3 or 4 types of raw fish offered and they are mostly served in an entree form. I like the different way they serve sushi and japanese food here. Tres different plating and portions for raw fish. I have no idea if it is more authentic or not. NO complaints on the fish quality. above average. Do not come here expecting to find a shopping list with checkboxes for nigiri. A very quiet relaxing place. Hot and cold sake and beer. enjoy! romantic spot or just quiet and relaxing. no scene here.

I wouldn't go here if it wasn't in my neighborhood, but I am glad it is. This used to be a favorite of my grandparents 30 years ago, and it feels like nothing has changed since then. The decor is delightfully dated and the service is always friendly. I am sure its not the most authentic Japanese food, but we have always had a good time at Koyo's.

Best Authentic Japanese food in SLC! Try the Sukiyaki and or one of the the many appetizers and salads and you'll be very very happy. The service is absolutely amazing (Miristi) and the owners actually care about their guests! The south shore roll is superb.

We reserved the private room at Koyo for my husbands birthday party. They were awesome! We have 8 more people than we thought and they made room for all of us. Food was so delicious and they even spiced up my husbands Gyoza just how he likes them! Love that they have so many healthy options and the gluten free soy sauce is the best. New annual birthday tradition for sure!

This place is terrible. Strange service. Empty at 7 on a Friday night. Food disgusting. Would never go there again. Worst restaurant experience of my life.

This is my favorite Japanese in Salt Lake or I suppose I can go ahead and say Utah. For reasons such as: *it's a fun environment. I have been here for dates, group dates, like to take my little niece here, and they also cater to my large family when we crave Japanese! They have the rooms where you can sit without shoes if you want and my nieces love that! *service is prompt. When I decide I'm hungry I'm usually already hangry so I sincerely appreciate prompt service. *the chicken skewers are juicy- very difficult with chicken. Miso soup warms my soul, classic. The spinach salad is refreshing- my absolute favorite. AND my dad's classic, the salted caramel ice cream. That being said if you ever just want ice cream, no joke go here, surprise your date, unexpectedly delicious dessert. The service is friendly, upbeat and classy. The food is consistent, never like when something is amazing so you go back craving it and it's different, not here, consistently delicious. I love it with my whole family and it's intimate with my date. Enjoy if you have the chance and are craving Japanese at any time!

I absolutely love Koyo. I've seen other negative reviews on Yelp but don't understand. I've been to Koyo many times over the past 8 years and have never had a bad meal or experience there. The food is consistently delicious and is where I go when I simply MUST have my Japanese comfort food fix. The Sukiyaki and tempura are absolutely transcendant. I also love the creamy sesame dressing that comes on the side salad. While they do have a smallish, but respectable and well executed sushi menu, it's not why I come to Koyo. They excel in fresh, expertly made Japanese home cooking. Try the breaded steak, it's tender and delicious and the sauce that comes on the side is great! I've also tried the salted Mackerel on a previous visit and was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. Beautifully presented and delicious. Not at all fishy. Go! Try it out! Hurry! Are you still there? You could be at Koyo by now!

Love Sushi, Maguro, sake, taking. Japanese food with a great setting. It even looks like you're in Japan.always fun to travel while you're close to home. Taste the difference. Anyplace you go you'll find their own flavor.

Very limited menu, very quiet, simple space. Everything we tried was delicious. The grilled mackerel, in particular, had a salty, crispy skin I really loved.

Avoid this place if you like Japanese food. If you have this place good reviews you know nothing about Japanese food or cuisine in general. I was in SLC on a business trip, starving after a long flight I found this restaurant .. Checked out ok on yelp, but turned into a disaster. Chopsticks .. Cheap wooden variety, what you would get at the mall. Salad .. Tasteless and watery. Brown bits of lettuce. Knew I was doomed after this. I should have ran. Miso was obviously from a packet served in a plastic bowl that I would expect at a food court. I got a tuna roll for an app. The rice was sugary! I mean like way sweet, in all my years I've never had sushi that I felt like an accidental amount of sugar was placed in the rice! The rolls were uneven and falling apart when served. And the garnish of parsley is a mismatch. Tempura frying temp was correct but oil was obviously dirty .. Tasted of other old food. Ok and this was scary, my plain white rice was bad! How?.. I mean you put white rice in the cooker and it's perfect ! How was mine soggy at the bottom and some crunchy? It must have been saved from the day before. Rice was mushy and falling apart. Sukiyaki was a disaster. I couldn't eat it and I was hungry. Sugar! What is the deal? It is supposed to be lightly sweet and salty with shredded thin meat. Instead brown sugar water and chunks of beef. Gross. Whoever is cooking there IS NOT TASTING THE FOOD, It is impossible to believe that any serious cook would serve this.

Koyo is an interesting place. The decor feels a little old school. But I've been with friends from Japan who say it's dead on as far as traditional Japanese decor. It's quiet, dimly lit, and peaceful, which is a funny word to use to describe the atmosphere in a restaurant but it's true. It also feels very clean and well taken care of. Ive been to Koyo many times and never had a bad experience. The service is great. Maritsi is a fantastic waitress. And the food is always great. The menu is very simple and traditional. Nothing fancy here. But what they do, they do well. The sushi rolls, as stated above, are very simple and they don't have a long list of options. If you want sushi this probably isn't the place. But the sushi does taste fresh. We love the spicy tekka maki and the ABC. The sukiyaki is fantastic. My favorite is the Koyo dinner which is steak teriyaki, soup, salad and vegetable tempura. My husband loves the chicken teriyaki dinner. The meat is always cooked perfectly and is tender and flavorful. Miso is great and the dressing on the salad is my favorite of any Japanese restaurant. The veggie tempura is great as well. Koyo has been around for a long time and for good reason. Great service, nice, quiet ambiance and great food. They always appreciate reservations! We have been turned away before when we didn't have a reservation. PS. They are great for lunch too!

This was the worst service I have ever received, the waiter hardly ever checked on us. He spilled soy sauce on the table and didn't clean it up. The sushi tasted old and not fresh. When we were getting our check it took 20 minutes without exaggeration. When they finally did a bring a check they didn't give us a pen to sign it, so it took another 10 minutes and we actually had to grab them as they walked by.

I have heard great things about Koyo for years, and was very excited to finally try eating there. Unfortunately The best thing I can about Koyo is that at least it felt clean. Definitely not authentic Japanese cuisine. Not the decor, the food or the staff. The sukiyaki was just inedible. Big thick chunks of steak floating on over cooked veggies in a very off tasting broth. The Gyoza tasted like they came out of the freezer and the filling looked slimy. The agedashi tofu was over cooked and the coating was very tough. The tempura was greasy and under seasoned, the shrimp was rubbery. The tuna sashimi was what would expect to get from a mall food court, mostly fresh but very low grade. Just save yourself the disappointment and don't go.
